Among the first settlers to come into Spanish West Florida (now known as Louisiana) were John George, Freeman George, and John George Jr. The 1820 US census of St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, shows these three families near each other on the Tickfaw River. Each family was shown to have a large plantation with slaves to help in clearing timber and tilling the soil. Freeman George married Elenora and they had eight sons. The family left Louisiana to join Stephen F. Austin in his settlement of Texas late in 1821. Freeman received one sitio of land in Matagorda County and one labor of land in Waller County. Elenora outlived Freeman by 15 years. She moved to Wharton County with her son David and his family. She lived with them until her death. The family legend says David eventually sold the land in Matagorda County for a "plug of tobacco" and land in Hays County.
