Love genealogy, editing, and publishing? Texas State Genealogical Society is seeking a dynamic individual to become the new editor for its quarterly magazine, STIRPES. Here are the details:
Purpose and Scope of STIRPES
STIRPES is a quarterly magazine published by Texas State Genealogical Society and includes helpful research articles, county records, family histories, reviews, queries, and other articles of genealogical interest.
Requirements
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and strong organizational skills.
- Genealogy writing and source standards experience including The Chicago Manual of Style as well as Evidenced Explained by Elizabeth Shown Mills.
- Editing and publishing experience with both print and digital media.
- Experience in conducting and writing genealogical research, sufficient to enable the individual to solicit and select research and articles that will result in a high-quality publication that also addresses the varying interests of the STIRPES readership.
- Ability to set and meet firm deadlines.
- Experience in setting and successfully executing a production schedule.
- Knowledge of all applicable copyright laws.
- Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Set the scope and tone of STIRPES.
- Develop a yearly editorial calendar.
- Set and execute a production schedule.
- Create and collaborate with STIRPES Editorial Committee to encourage submissions of content that meets the scope, tone, and standards of STIRPES and to develop and maintain relationships with authors and potential authors.
- Review all submitted material for compliance of set scope, tone, and standards.
- Correspond with all STIRPES contributors in a timely manner.
- Edit and layout STIRPES using Adobe InDesign.
- Maintain STIRPES template and update the content in each issue.
- Thoroughly review and edit drafts.
- Collaborate with TSGS Director of Communications, TSGS Webmaster and TSGS Director of Membership for web publishing schedules.
- Collaborate with printer for publication.
- Communicate regularly with TSGS Director of Communications.
- Attend TSGS’s annual meeting.
- Prepare quarterly reports for the TSGS Board of Directors.
- Answer questions and inquiries pertaining to the magazine.
- Perform other relevant duties as needed.
