Our highlighted speaker Kelvin Meyers is teaching two breakout sessions, and an in-depth workshop on Texas land records.
About the Speaker
A fifth generation Texan and professional forensic genealogist since 1996, Kelvin is a frequent speaker to genealogical societies and family associations throughout the United States. As a graduate of Texas Tech University with a history major, he is an avid research-historian. After being employed for ten years in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, Kelvin now has a solo practice as a forensic genealogist serving clients that include probate attorneys, trust department of banks, the US Immigration Service and energy companies. Kelvin also conducts research for clients with Southern brick wall problems.
Kelvin is a 1989 and 1990 alumni of the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research at Samford University and has returned to IGHR as lecturer. In 2016 he co-coordinated with J. Mark Lowe, “A Swing Through the South” at SLIG (Salt Lake Institute of Genealogical Research).
He is a past board member of the Association of Professional Genealogist, a past President of the Lone Star Chapter of APG, and a founding member for the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy (CAFG).
Kelvin recently published the guide for Research in Texas for NGS (National Genealogical Society), Research in the states series. Kelvin also currently serves as the chairman of the history and archives committee for First United Methodist Church in Dallas.

My Ancestor the Texas Ranger, Proving his Service
No, not The baseball team or even the Lone Ranger, but the men who protected the frontier from Indians and cattle thieves and even today still serve and protect the people of Texas. This lecture looks at the many resources available to prove service in the Texas Rangers and how to access them and use them effectively.

And In Local News…My Ancestor made the Newspaper
The Star, The Globe, The National Inquirer have nothing on the newspapers of the 19th century and early 20th century. These papers left no stone unturned or any “juicy” story untold. The life of your ancestor and the lives of those people just like them can be traced in the newspaper. The denominational newspapers were also full of births, deaths, marriages and editorials on how you should vote and feel about every issue imaginable.

Highlighted Workshop
With or Without Land: Using Land Records to Find Your Texas Ancestor
Whether your ancestor owned land or not, you can locate records that can help you learn more about that ancestor. Using land records, both county and state, tax records, the agricultural census and the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) maps of the Texas General Land Office, you can locate your ancestors land and find clues to more records to flesh out your ancestor’s life. This workshop will be hands on to help you hone you research skills. (You are encouraged to bring your laptops or tablets to learn how to use applicable websites to enhance your research experience.)
