Genealogy Essentials #1: Introduction to Genealogy Basic Knowledge

Learn standards for recording names, dates, and places; explore various record types and resources; and understand the differences between sources and evidence. Participants will gain insights into verifying information accuracy and reflecting on the importance of genealogy for their family. A homework assignment focused on creating a pedigree chart will reinforce these skills.


Genealogy Essentials #2: Using Census Records

This session explores the census as a vital research tool, teaching participants how to interpret and apply the information it contains. The course introduces the research cycle, emphasizing the value of crafting quality research questions and developing a research plan. Genealogy Essentials #3: Record Types and Evaluation

Genealogy Essentials #4: Research Strategies and Techniques

Participants will learn practical techniques to conduct research onsite and develop a deeper understanding of locality-specific resources. Genealogy Essentials #5: Vital Records Research and Alternatives

Vital records, such as birth, marriage, and death documents, are often key to family research. However, when these records are unavailable, substitutions may be necessary. This session teaches participants how to locate and evaluate both traditional and alternative resources to fill gaps in their research. Homework will focus on creating a timeline for an ancestor, identifying gaps, and researching key dates.


Genealogy Essentials #6: Free Online Resources
Instructor: Laura Douglas

Genealogists have unprecedented access to online resources, many of which are free. This session introduces a range of websites and tools for exploring location-specific and topic-based resources. Participants will gain practical tips for identifying and using these free tools effectively. Homework will include researching documents on three different free websites.


Genealogy Essentials #7: Newspaper Research
Instructor: Barbara Coakley

Newspapers are rich sources for uncovering the daily lives of ancestors. This session covers how to find and use articles, obituaries, marriage notices, military reports, and more. Participants will learn to enrich their family trees with stories from the past. Homework includes adding to a previously developed locality guide and conducting newspaper research on a specific ancestor.


Genealogy Essentials #8: Organizing, Documenting, and Sharing Your Research
Instructor: Emily Richardson
Released: Monday, February 3, 2025
Effective organization is critical to genealogy success. This session explores strategies for managing research using both paper and digital tools, discusses the benefits of genealogical software, and emphasizes the importance of writing during the research process. Participants will learn how to create shareable documentation to preserve and present their findings.
