James Blair, born 18 May 1800, died 22 Oct 1878, married (1) Mary Murdock, (2) Nancy Brantley.
James Blair moved to Texas from Bellville, Illinois, in October 1837 at the age of 37. He was born 18 May 1800 in St. Clair, Pike County, Illinois. He died 22 October 1878 in Denton County, Texas. After his first wife Martha died he married Nancy Brantley. From these unions he raised ten children.
James was a farmer and Indian fighter. Prior to moving to Texas, he served as a lieutenant with Captain Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk Indian Wars of Illinois in 1832. James also served as a captain under General Tarrant in quelling Indian uprisings in East Texas in 1841.
In 1850, James rode a horse by himself back to Illinois and brought his four grandchildren back to Texas after the death of his daughter and her husband. In 1855, he was awarded additional land in Texas for his service in the Black Hawk War. His sons served in the Civil War in the 2nd Regiment, Texas Partisan, which later was merged into the 34th Calvary.
