Compton-Clanton - John Calhoun Compton and Margaret White Clanton- Brief Bio



John Calhoun Compton was born 25 October 1825 in Morgan County, Illinois, the oldest child of Edward Loney Compton and Mary Susan Carelock Compton. The family moved to Independence County, Arkansas, some time between 1830 and 1833 then on to Texas by 1843 (based on census records and birth records of subsequent children). They settled briefly in Fannin County, then moved to Milam and Williamson County, Texas.

John married Mary Polly Berry 30 October 1850 in Williamson County, had ten children, then divorced. He then married Margaret White Clanton (second-great-grandmother of TX000131) and ran a dairy in Stephens County, Texas. They had three children together including (great-grandfather of TX000131) Charles Richard Compton who went on to acquire more land which is still owned and ranched by his descendants today. 

John served in the Mexican War from 1846-1848 under Col. P. H. Bell 's regiment of the Texas Mounted Volunteers, commanded by Shapley Ross. John later served with Smith's Battalion. In 1861 he enlisted for service in the Civil War, serving in the 27th Brigade of the Texas Militia under Archie Hart, then later in E. H. Vontress's Texas Cavalry, Company A.

John obtained patents from the state for land in Stephens County where he farmed and ranched.
