Burleson-Shipman - Captain James Burleson and Elizabeth Shipman - Brief bio

Captain James Burleson was a pioneer settler and Burleson clan leader in Austin's Little Colony. James's oldest son was General Edward Burleson who platted the cities of Austin and San Marcos and served as vice president of the Republic of Texas. James moved to Texas in 1830 and obtained a league of land on the Colorado River below Austin's Little Colony. James's wife died there. James led a decisive charge in the Grass Fight at the siege of Bexar, under the command of his son, General Burleson. James became ill after being discharged and died at the home of his daughter, Rachael Rogers, north of Bastrop on 3 January 1836. He is buried in the McDuff Cemetery on the east side of the Colorado River.
