Archer - William E. Archer - Brief bio



William E. Archer, Daughters of Republic (DRT), Texas First Families 

Muster Roll, Capt Sovercus, County Volunteers under Col. Harrison in Oct. 1836 William E. Archer was born in South Carolina on 20 June 1812. On Christmas Day 1831, he married Martha Ann "Betsy" Monk in Lowndes County, Alabama. Archer was in the Republic of Texas Army from May 26th to September 5th 1836. For these services he received a bounty of 320 acres.

Lillie Whittenburg Ratliff writes of a family tradition that William E. Archer was involved in bringing wagon trains of settlers from Alabama to Robertson County, Texas, and that they first came to the area in 1831 and made several trips back and forth. The family story is that all able-bodied men in the family went to fight in the Texas Revolution. Martha Ann (Monk) Archer's father gathered up the women and children and headed back to Alabama to safety.
