Thomas-Clark - Ezekiel Thomas and Vander Artimissie Clark - Brief bio

Ezekiel and Vander Artimissie Clark married in 1861. Soon after that Ezekiel enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He was captured at Vicksburg and released four days later. His older brother, James, was wounded and entered the military hospital in Mobile where he contracted measles and died. Ezekiel returned to his unit and served to the end of the war. For his service he received a pension.

In 1871, several of the Thomas and Clark clan plus other relatives and friends loaded up their families and made the long journey to East Texas by covered wagon, arriving there in December 1871. Ezekiel and Artimissie had eleven children, ten lived to adulthood. Ezekiel farmed as did all of his children while growing up. He and Artimissie helped to establish the Summerfield Methodist Church in the Judson Community (now Longview) and they were tireless workers for the church. Artimissie died in 1916 and Ezekiel died the next year, 1917.
