Johnson-Cannaday - Joseph Johnson and Elizabeth Cannaday Johnson - Brief bio

Joseph Johnson was born about 1844 in Tennessee. By the time of the 1860 census 15-year-old Joseph and his family were living in Upshur County, Texas. In 1884, Joseph married Elizabeth Cannaday in Franklin County, Texas. Elizabeth Cannaday was born about 1858 in Texas. Joseph and Elizabeth had three children: Sarah Etta born in 1885, Lewis Mervin born in 1889, and John Wesley born in 1893.

Both Joseph and Elizabeth died about 1894 to 1895. The family oral tradition is that they died from tuberculosis. The three surviving Johnson children were taken in and raised by Robert and Sally Pettit. In 1913, the Pettits legally adopted John Wesley age 19. Later in 1913, John Wesley changed his legal name to Pettit. These 1913 docs identify John's birth parents as Joseph and Elizabeth Johnson.

The exact death dates for Joseph and Elizabeth are unknown. However, the Franklin County tax rolls show that they paid property tax until 1895. Joseph paid the property tax in Franklin County for the last time in 1893 on 28 acres that were part of abstract 152. In 1894, Elizabeth Johnson paid the taxes on the same 28 acres. By 1895, the taxes were paid by someone else. John Wesley Johnson's name change document states that Joseph and Elizabeth died when he was one year old. This would put their death dates in 1894 to 1895.
