McManus-Land - Alvis McManus and Sarah Emily Land - Brief bio



Alvis McManus was born by 1830 in Chatham County, North Carolina. He was the son of Benjamin McManus and his wife Sarah. By 1850, the family had moved to Cherokee County, Georgia. He married Sarah Emily Land in 1858 in Cherokee County, Georgia. Alvis was a farmer and shoe maker by trade. On 12 April 1864, he joined the Confederate States Army as a member of the Phillips Legion. During the Civil War, he was captured by the Union Army and held at Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. He was released at the end of the war. In 1867, he signed a Reconstruction Oath.
