Sweeney-Barlow - James Sweeney and Margaret Jane Barlow - Brief bio

James Sweeney and Margaret Jane Barlow were married in New Orleans in 1871 when Jane was only 13 years old. By 1875 James was living in Galveston and by 1878 Jane was there when she gave birth to their first known child, Mary Catherine Sweeney, born 12 August 1878 per the baptismal records of St. Mary's Cathedral, Galveston.

James ran a restaurant on Market Street from the early 1880s until the mid-1890s with numerous mentions in the Galveston newspapers. Tragically Mary Catherine and their second child, James Spencer, died of diphtheria within days of each other in 1883. This was only three months after the birth of their third child Maggie Sweeney. In 1885 William Patrick was born, followed by David John, great-grandfather of TX000102, in 1887.

Tragedy struck again in March 1891 when Margaret Jane became ill while pregant. Louise Francis was born two months premature. Margaret Jane died soon after the birth and Louise Frances died two months later. By June of 1900 James was running a smaller restaurant on 20th Street, half a block from City Hall and just around the corner from the Grand Opera house. Sons W.P. and D.J. worked as waiters and hosts in the restuarant while Maggie attended school in San Antonio. James and the boys survived the Great Storm of 1900, The Galveston hurricane, but James died just over a year later.
