Text Francis Marion Clary married Elizabeth Ann Pitts (nee Conn), the widow of Isaac Pitts, in Grimes County, Texas. Inasmuch as both Francis Marion Clary and Elizabeth Ann Pitts were living in Grimes County, it is likely that they were married there and the marriage license was destroyed in the courthouse fire of 1848. SOURCE: The fact of the marriage is from various sources, including pleadings in the case of Archibald Willingham vs. Obadiah Pitts [McLennan County, Texas District Clerk, Loose Case papers, Archibald Willingham vs. Obadiah Pitts, #434]; deed from Elizabeth Clary and husband Frank Clary to Willingham heirs [McLennan County, Texas County Clerk, Deed Records, Volume U, Page 257]; SOURCE: The marriage date for Francis Marion Clary and Elizabeth Ann Conn, widow of Isaac Pitts, is calculated as Fall 1847 based on the following data. 1. Trammell Francis Marion Clary, their oldest child was born 28 October 1849, see hereafter. 2. The 1847 tax roll of Grimes County, Texas, certified on 20 July 1847, shows Elizabeth A. Pitts. The 1848 tax roll of Grimes County, Texas, certified on 20 July 1848, shows Elizabeth A. Clary as guardian of O. I. Pitts, obviously reflecting that she had married between the dates of the two tax rolls. Since the 1848 tax roll should have been based on facts as they existed at 1 January 1848 it is likely that she was married by that date.
